Saint Helena is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is STILL part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha,The island is about 10 by 5 mi and has a population of 5,255 (2013 census.
Until 1502 the island was uninhabited when discovered by Portuguese explorers. One of the most isolated islands in the world, it was for hundreds of years simply a stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa to refit and restock with water.
The British used the island as a place of political exile, famously for Napoleon Bonaparte and more recently more than 5,000 Boer prisoners.
Saint Helena remains one of Britain's second oldest remaining colony after the better know Bermuda.
